The new cards

Driver licence and heavy vehicle driver licence

The Queensland Government is replacing the current laminate driver licence and heavy vehicle driver licence with more secure, more durable, more reliable licences.

All licensing and personal information that is currently on the face of your laminated licence will remain on the face of your new card, and your address will be shown on the back.

If you hold a marine licence and either a driver licence or heavy vehicle licence, a marine licence indicator will be put on the back of your new licence when you upgrade to a new card.

When you are issued your Queensland driver licence, your licence will show only the highest class or classes of vehicle that you are eligible to drive. This means you are allowed to drive each type of vehicle listed for that licence code. However, motorbike class RE or R will appear separately on the licence.

If you apply for a class HR (heavy rigid), HC (heavy combination) or MC (multi-combination) licence you will receive a magenta heavy vehicle driver licence. If you only hold a class C (car), LR (light rigid), MR (medium rigid), RE (learner approved motorbike) or R (unrestricted motorbike) licence you will receive a yellow (gold) licence.

Adult proof of age card

The adult proof of age card is a more secure, more durable and more reliable replacement for card 18+. It is ideal for people who do not drive.

It will also provide proof of age for Queenslanders 18 years of age or older. You can apply for an adult proof of age card from 17 years and 11 months of age.

If you are under 18 years of age when you apply for an adult proof of age card, your application will be processed and your card will be sent to the licence issuing centre where you applied for your card. You will be contacted when your card is available, but you will not be able to collect your card until you turn 18 years of age.

If you are 18 years or over when you lodge your application, your card will be sent to your mailing address within 14 days.

All current card 18+ products will still be recognised and moving to the new card is optional. However, new cards are given to all new adult proof of age card applicants.

As with the current card 18+, the adult proof of age card does not show the cardholder's address details.

Marine licence indicator card

If you hold a marine licence and either a driver licence or heavy vehicle licence, a marine licence indicator will be put on the back of your new licence when you upgrade to a new card.

A separate blue marine licence indicator card will only be given to applicants who do not hold a driver licence.

All current marine licences will still be valid and moving to the new card is optional. However, new cards are given to all new marine licence applicants.

Industry authority card

A single industry authority card is replacing existing industry authorisation, certificate and accreditation cards.

The industry authority card is a more secure, more durable and more reliable card than the existing laminated cards.

The new single industry authority card displays all industry authorities that have been granted to you, which may include:

  • driver authorisations for
    • limousine services
    • scheduled or general bus services
    • motorcycle touring services
    • taxi services
  • tow truck driver and assistant certificates
  • dangerous goods driver licence
  • driver and rider trainer accreditation
  • pilot and escort vehicle driver accreditation
  • traffic controller accreditation.

The existing application process has changed with the introduction of the new industry authority card.

Now, when you lodge an application for any industry authority, you are required to pay all total fees upfront. If you supply all the necessary documents and pay the fees, provided you meet the eligibility requirements and your application is approved, a new industry authority card will be mailed to you. You no longer need to return to the licence issuing centre once your application has been approved.

Due to continuous improvements by the card manufacturer, there may be slight variations in card appearance.
