Bruce Highway (Townsville to Ingham) safety improvements and rest area upgrade projects
Bruce Highway works, between Townsville and Ingham, are underway to improve safety and upgrade a rest area.
The 3 projects will improve travelling conditions on the Bruce Highway through:
- upgraded roadside facilities at the Christmas Creek rest area
- provision of a new northbound overtaking lane between Leichhardt Creek and Lilypond Creek to complement an existing, southbound overtaking lane
- widening of the Bruce Highway pavement to accommodate 1-metre-wide centreline treatments.

Key features
Christmas Creek rest area upgrades:
- improve conditions for motorists through the installation of ablutions
- offer real-time information on rest area availability for large vehicles
- Intelligent Transport Systems with specifically advanced warning signs, automatic number place recognition cameras and smart energy systems to power the Intelligent Transport Systems devices.
Pavement upgrades and overtaking lane projects:
- pavement widening to accommodate wide centre line treatments
- extending culverts to accommodate the wider pavement
- installation of northbound overtaking lane
- providing a new southbound emergency stopping bay.
Current status
Construction on all 3 projects is expected to be completed by mid-2023.
