Bruce Highway (Townsville to Ingham) safety improvements and rest area upgrade projects

Bruce Highway works, between Townsville and Ingham, are underway to improve safety and upgrade a rest area.

The 3 projects will improve travelling conditions on the Bruce Highway through:

  • upgraded roadside facilities at the Christmas Creek rest area
  • provision of a new northbound overtaking lane between  Leichhardt Creek and Lilypond Creek to complement an existing, southbound overtaking lane
  • widening of the Bruce Highway pavement to accommodate 1-metre-wide centreline treatments.

Key features

Christmas Creek rest area upgrades:

  • improve conditions for motorists through the installation of ablutions
  • offer real-time information on rest area availability for large vehicles
  • Intelligent Transport Systems with specifically advanced warning signs, automatic number place recognition cameras and smart energy systems to power the Intelligent Transport Systems devices. 

Pavement upgrades and overtaking lane projects:

  • pavement widening to accommodate wide centre line treatments
  • extending culverts to accommodate the wider pavement
  • installation of northbound overtaking lane
  • providing a new southbound emergency stopping bay.

Current status

Construction on all 3 projects is expected to be completed by mid-2023.
