Bruce Highway Vision and Action Plans

The Bruce Highway is Queensland’s longest road, stretching 1673km from Brisbane in the south of the state, to Cairns in the north. The Bruce Highway joins coastal population centres, directly and through connecting roads to Brisbane, Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Maryborough, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.

15-year Vision and Action Plans for the Bruce Highway

Our 15-year Vision and Action Plans for the Bruce Highway is part of the ongoing commitment to prioritise funding investment in supporting the existing Bruce Highway Upgrade Program.

The Bruce Highway Vision and Action Plan objectives are to:

  • unlock economic growth
  • build flood resilience
  • improve safety

Our 15-year vision priorities include:

  • capacity upgrades
  • intersection upgrades
  • pavement rehabilitation
  • reduction in flooding closures
  • widening of narrow bridges
  • intelligent transport systems
  • wide centre line treatment
  • new and upgraded rest areas.

Safer Bruce 2030 Action Plan

We are committed to improving safety on the Bruce Highway through the Safer Bruce 2030 Action Plan. We have set ambitious safety targets to drive a 60% reduction in the rate of fatalities by 2030. The Safer Bruce 2030 Action Plan accompanies the 15-year Vision and Action Plans for the Bruce Highway which aims to unlock economic growth, build flood resilience and improve safety.

Key actions in the Safer Bruce 2030 Action Plan align with the Safe System approach adapted from the Queensland Road Safety Action Plan 2022–24. The action plan includes Bruce Highway specific responses and actions that are being implemented across the broader Queensland road network and which are relevant to the Bruce Highway safety outcomes.

Development of the action plans

The Bruce Highway Trust Advisory Council oversaw the development of the Bruce Highway action plans. The Council was represented by members from Queensland's peak transport and industry bodies. Members also included regional representatives of road users, road safety and regional development experts from along the Bruce Highway, north of Gympie.

The Council gained critical information from extensive customer research. This included analysing customer enquiries submissions and complaints an online survey (with nearly 4000 respondents) and in-depth interviews and focus groups with key stakeholders. Drawing on the technical expertise of the department, the Council also conducted a technical analysis on deficiencies and used these key inputs in prioritising future investments on the Bruce Highway.
