Researchers finding ways to improve and increase cycling

Overview

Action 5.1: Deliver a 5-year program of cycling research, in collaboration with the Queensland academic sector, which includes research into state-of-art technology, state-of-practice and other opportunities and challenges for cycling.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

Research is being conducted into new technologies and to better understand the opportunities and challenges for increasing bicycle riding in Queensland.

We have partnered with the Queensland academic sector to complete research on how best to measure the impact of construction of cycling infrastructure projects on the broader network, the economic benefits of cycling infrastructure projects and the untapped demand for bicycle riding in Queensland.

We have also begun research to improve our understanding of current and planned uses of electric bicycles, how we might trial short term changes to the built environment to encourage bicycle riding and win support for permanent changes, and how to evaluate changes and community benefits from construction of the North Brisbane Bikeway.

Next steps

We will continue to partner with the Queensland academic sector to research opportunities and challenges for bicycle riding to ensure the investments we make in cycling infrastructure and programs have positive impacts on our wellbeing and prosperity.
