Action 4.5, Action Plan for Walking 2019–2021

Status: Complete

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has reviewed the walking data it collects to identify gaps and deficiencies. The project provided advice on new data collection approaches that TMR could use to better address its requirements.

Achievements

There are well-established data sources for walking but collection has been limited compared to other modes of transport. A more systematic approach is needed to ensure that the data collected meets the requirements of practitioners.

TMR conducted research to investigate the shortcomings. The project engaged with transport planners, engineers and data analysts in the department and local government to ascertain their satisfaction of current walking data sources and identify any deficiencies.

The research found that there are discrepancies between practitioner requirements and the data currently collected. These include a need for:

  • a readily available data source on the location and attributes of existing walking paths, including accessible infrastructure
  • inclusion of people walking in existing data collection processes and traffic modelling
  • increased availability of walking count data
  • evidence of the benefits of investment in walking and pedestrian infrastructure that can be used to guide planning and support the case for further funding.

The outcomes of this project will inform and guide how TMR collects walking data across Queensland. Having the appropriate data will make walking more visible within the planning process, support the business case for funding walking projects and infrastructure, and support evidence-based decision making for transport projects across Queensland.

Next steps

TMR will develop a standardised and targeted approach to walking data collection to support planning, delivery and monitoring of better walking environments.

We will work with local governments to improve their data collection through the Local Government Planning Grants Program.
