Explore active transport requirements and opportunities within the future Mobility as a Service (MaaS) ecosystem and ensure walking and bicycle riding are considered in design thinking workshops for MaaS proofs of concept.

Key achievements

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is exploring Mobility as a Service and the role it can play in the future of transport in Queensland. MaaS embodies a shift away from personally owned modes of transportation, towards integrated mobility solutions which are consumed as a service.

MaaS is the combination of public and private transportation services accessed via an application which provides personalised journey planning, booking and payment. It enables individual mobility budgeting through single payment or subscription models, it offers choice and dynamic travel options and it provides a platform to incentivise and influence behaviour to better optimise the network.

Through this exploration a strategic options assessment that included walking and bicycle riding, was undertaken. MaaS is also being tested through a range of proofs of concept with various stakeholders. Walking is a key mobility mode, along with bicycle riding, public transport, micro-mobility and demand responsive transport which form part of the future MaaS ecosystem. These modes were explored in several human centred design workshops held in 2019 with local council and other key stakeholders.
