Action 1.8, Action Plan for Walking 2019–2021

Status: Complete

To make it easier to use public transport, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has a program of works to improve signage and wayfinding for customers. These improvements benefit people who are walking to, from and between public transport stations by providing information about direction, time and facilities. The information is provided in formats including braille and QR codes.

Achievements

TMR has a program of works to improve signage and wayfinding for customers across the public transport network.

In the last 2 years this program has delivered signage and wayfinding upgrades at key locations. These include:

  • Buranda busway and rail station precincts
  • Noosa Junction bus station
  • Queen Street bus station/The Myer Centre precinct
  • South Bank busway station
  • Boggo Road busway station/Park Road station
  • Aspley bus station and park 'n' ride facility.

To increase the number of people who benefit from these improvements, TMR has introduced technology initiatives such as e-paper timetables, braille signage and QR codes at key bus stops and interchanges.

These improvements make it easier for customers to find their bus stop and access real time information in multiple formats. They also help to make walking to and from public transport a more attractive option.

Next steps

TMR will continue to improve precinct signage and wayfinding around stations. Upcoming projects include South Bank train station and the Cleveland station precinct.

Investigations will continue into supportive navigational aids using smart device technology to assist customers navigate in and around public transport facilities.
