Research completed on opportunities for bicycle tourism

Overview

Action 4.3: Publish a discussion paper about developing long distance bicycle touring routes in Queensland, identifying opportunities and taking into consideration national and international best practice.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

In collaboration with the Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development, we have completed an exciting piece of research, looking into how bicycle tourism can help power Queensland’s economy.

This research confirmed the economic benefit of bike tourism and discovered the most significant opportunity for Queensland is to develop signature single-day and multi-day recreational trail riding experiences.

The research also considered opportunities for bicycle touring and found that while there is some demand, for the time being this is likely to remain a relatively small and niche tourism market.

Next steps

We will research national and international best practice and opportunities to develop recreational trails in Queensland and publish the findings.
