Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We published and promoted a suite of Bike Tourism in Queensland research reports about bicycle tourism opportunities in Queensland. The reports provide in-depth analysis of the market and demand for bike tourism, based on Queensland Government commissioned research conducted in 2018.

The research revealed 4 key types of bike tourism—trail riding, holiday riding, mountain biking, and road cycling—and identified significant latent demand for bike tourism experiences, particularly half and single day trail riding and mountain biking experiences. The research also identified key success factors to develop bike tourism experiences and destinations and grow bike tourism in Queensland.

The reports provide all levels of government, industry and the community with a strong evidence base for future decision making and initiatives to grow bike tourism in Queensland.

We promoted the reports to local governments and bike riding and tourism industry stakeholders across the state through a range of communication activities. The reports are also referenced on the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport and Tourism and Events Queensland websites.

Next steps

We used the research findings to inform our approach to the recreational trails planning initiative being delivered in response to Queensland Cycling Action Plan 2020–2022 Action 4.3

The research reports are available on our website to inform and guide future Queensland Government initiatives relating to bicycle tourism.
