Collaborating with industry helps identify ways to help protect bike riders when sharing our roads with heavy vehicles.

Overview

Action 3.5: Consult with construction industry organisations to develop options within infrastructure contract provisions and delivery processes to minimise risks for vulnerable road users including bicycle riders around heavy vehicles.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

As part of our regular engagement with civil construction industry peak bodies, we consulted the Queensland Major Contractors Association, the Australian Flexible Pavement Association and the Cement Concrete Aggregates Association to gather insights and suggestions for ways to minimise risks for vulnerable road users, including bicycle riders, around heavy vehicles and construction sites.

We collected a range of suggestions during the consultation. While the suggestions did not directly relate to options within infrastructure contract provisions or delivery processes, they provided valuable insights to other potential opportunities for minimising risks for vulnerable road users including bicycle riders around heavy vehicles.

Next steps

During 2023, we will consider the industry suggestions, including any policy or legislative changes that may be needed.
