Sharing the road messages go viral

Side-by-side of 2 graphics depicting overhead views of roads with trucks and other vehicles. One says, "Beware of blind spots" above an image of a truck with cars around it, and the other shows someone riding a bike next to a truck approaching an intersection.
Examples of illustrations shared on social media help to spread awareness about how bikes and heavy vehicles can safely share the road.

Overview

Action 3.3: Develop awareness and education tools in collaboration with key stakeholders to promote heavy vehicles and bicycles sharing the road.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We published a series of social media posts to develop awareness of interactions between heavy vehicle drivers and bike riders sharing the road.

The posts reached nearly four million readers, with over 200,000 video views, over 63,000 reactions (emojis and likes), over 65,000 direct engagements, 2200 comments and 695 shares.

In September 2022, we incorporated this type of social media content into ongoing business processes. Under this process, specific months of the year will be dedicated to featuring posts about bike rider safety, heavy vehicle safety and sharing the road.

We also participated in Brisbane City Council's Safe Travel Together project promoting safer interactions between bicycle riders and heavy vehicles.

Next steps

We will continue to publish social media posts dedicated to bike rider safety, heavy vehicle safety and sharing the road.
