New course to improve safety for bicycle riders and pedestrians at road works

A street full of cars with a city skyline in the background. A roadwork barrier is set up between the car lanes and a bicycle lane, which 2 bike riders are riding on. A yellow sign in the foreground says "bicycles" with an arrow pointing in the direction the bike riders are riding.
This roadworks site on a Brisbane road includes measures to allow bike riders to travel safety through.

Overview

Action 3.6: Develop an online course about provision of safe travel path for bicycle riders and pedestrians at road works for local government decision makers and traffic management professionals..

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We developed the Cyclist and pedestrian safety at roadworks online training course to build knowledge and capability in creating safe environments for vulnerable road users at roadworks.

The course is designed for people working in traffic management, roadworks, construction and events management, or anyone interested in learning how to create safe and accessible travel paths for people riding bicycles and walking.

The course provides an overview of:

  • the current guidance available to practitioners
  • the principles behind providing a safe roadworks environment
  • effective treatments for resolving common issues experienced by people walking and riding bicycles.

We published the course in February 2023 and promoted the course to our staff and contractors, local governments and industry.

Next steps

We will monitor course completion rates and user feedback to identify future improvements. We will also leverage opportunities to raise awareness and encourage roadworks and traffic management practitioners to complete the course.
