2 people riding bikes on a roadway in front of a row of store fronts and restaurants.
A new training course will help build capability in setting appropriate speed limits to improve bike riding safety and participation.

Overview

Action 3.4: Develop training materials to support setting appropriate speed limits in areas frequented by vulnerable road users, including bicycle riders, as provided for in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Part 4.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

We developed the Setting speed limits around pedestrians and cyclists online course outlining how speed limits set in Queensland consider vulnerable road users.

The course trains participants to:

  • be aware of the importance and benefits of setting speed limits around people who walk or ride bikes
  • understand how the speed limit review process considers people who walk and ride bikes
  • know how to use strategies to support speed limit recommendations.

We released the course in April 2022 and it is available to anyone involved in the speed limit setting process.

Next steps

We will monitor course completion rates and leverage opportunities to promote the course.
